Why Lazarus?

There are two Lazaruses mentioned in the Bible. The lesser known Lazarus sits at the gates of the Rich Man’s house and represents those who find themselves on the margins of society. Often looked down upon or overlooked completely, this Lazarus was dead to the world but honoured in heaven.

The second Lazarus, perhaps more well known, was a friend of Jesus. He was a living example of God's power when Jesus raised him from the dead. Jesus called to him, “Lazarus, wake up!”. We believe that, in the same way, God is calling into the tomb, “Church, wake up!”

God is calling us to seek his Kingdom and the fullness thereof, recognizing the power of God in each one of us, especially persons with dis/abilities. Both Lazaruses were raised to life and witnesses of the Gospel. The name Lazarus means “God has helped.” We are all in need of a helper and a saviour. Together, we long to see God’s Kingdom come. We believe the Church is a place where persons of all dis/abilities can thrive within the body as saints and ministers of the gospel.

  • Equip the local church with the education, resources and support needed to help them become a place where persons with dis/abilities can flourish

  • Empower persons with dis/abilities by amplifying their voices and stories, advocating when and where needed, and supporting them as a community of belonging

  • Engage champions of the Kingdom of God, a network of individuals, churches and organizations that are committed to learning from each other to create inclusive communities of belonging

  • and Encourage families of persons with dis/abilities
